A brief history of the casino

Throughout the history of time, the human race has been obsessed with gambling. Dating back thousands of years, developments have helped shape up the casino industry as we know it today with games from yesteryear including blackjack and roulette played widely at both land-based casinos and online. Read on to learn more.

The birth of the casino

The earliest gambling ever recorded took place about 2300 B.C. by the Chinese, where they enjoyed playing with tiles with one another. Another instance goes back to around 1500 B.C. when ancient Egyptian dice were unearthed. Defining a precise time period for when gambling was invented is impossible but we can pinpoint for sure when the first ever official casino was established.

Although gambling has always been considered as a pastime, there was never an official and legitimate building where players could go to play. All this changed in 1638, when the Casino di Venezia in Venice was opened during the Carnival season which allowed organized gambling during this event.

It wasn’t until the late 18th and 19th centuries, that the term ‘casino’ was coined. It was at this time that gaming buildings began popping up in mainland Europe, especially in areas such as Baden-Baden and Wiesbaden in Germany as well as Monte Carlo.

How did casino games come about?

The card game blackjack originates from the French casinos of the 1700s, where a game called Vingt-et-Un was played. Some historians believe that the game’s roots however, lay in Spain. Gamblers in Spain played a game called One and Thirty, a three-card version where players had to get as close as possible to the number 31.

The Romans were also known for their love of games. They had their own version of blackjack, which entailed the players being given wooden blocks with numbers and betting on which ombinations had the highest value.

Online casinos and casino bonus offers

Since the Roman days, gambling has come a long way and now offers the added advantage of playing online. It is also a fairly recent development that gamblers can now play on the go on their phone or tablet via mobile casinos, whenever and wherever they want.
