All the presents have been unwrapped and the tree has gone back into storage as January gets underway and everyone looks forward to an exciting year.
Game development studios have been busy, coming up with an array of new slot games to be released in the coming months. From cult icons to sporting legends, the range of themes represented in these games is expansive.
Today we are taking a look at some titles that are due to be released in 2019 as well as our predictions on what they might look and play like. Take a look and see what your favourite slot provider will be launching this year.
Scudamore’s Super Stakes – NetEnt
As game themes go, horse racing is not an enormously popular one. There are a good handful of titles, certainly, but it appears that slot providers are not exactly champing at the bit to release horse racing slots.
The first one that comes to mind is Playtech’s Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven slot, released in 2010 and followed by two related slots, one with a jackpot, launched in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
This year, NetEnt might be the one to breathe new life into horse racing as a theme for slot games. Marking its first sports collaboration, Scudamore’s Super Stakes is based on the 15-year career of Peter Scudamore MBE, who is now one of the top trainers in the business after recording 1,678 wins.
NetEnt has revealed that Scudamore’s voice, image and footage from his winning races will appear in the slot. We reckon that will help create the kind of electric atmosphere one would find at a race track.
Other than that information, NetEnt has not told us much more except that the game will have a high volatility. This will appeal to high rollers in particular, as NetEnt already have plenty of products offering mid-variance/average RTP.
Village People – Microgaming
“Young man, there’s no need to feel down!” This phrase will bring any dancefloor to life and for good reason. ‘Y.M.C.A.’ is probably one of the most well-known songs on the planet and people of all ages enjoy throwing shapes to this 1978 disco classic.
Microgaming has a plan to bring that era back. A licensing deal with ITV Studios Global Entertainment means that the studio has been able to develop a new game based on the iconic Village People ensemble and their greatest hits.
Details have been thin on the ground, save for Microgaming’s press release on the deal back in September. We do know that we can expect characters like the Biker and the Cowboy to make an appearance and it won’t all be about the YMCA – other hits like Macho Man and Go West will feature too, ensuring that this slot will be an unforgettable nostalgic journey to the heyday of 70’s disco.
Treasure Horse / Mustang Gold – Pragmatic Play
We’re sensing a bit of an equestrian theme here, with Pragmatic Play releasing two similar slots within a month of each other. Unlike the other slots we have mentioned so far, there is a little more info out there on these titles that we can share with you.
With a Wild West theme, Mustang Gold will be celebrating all things cowboy. A 5×3 reel structure with 25 betlines, Mustang Gold looks to be a fun way to kick up some dust, with a free spins feature, multipliers and a medium-high variance to keep things interesting.
With Treasure Horse, Pragmatic Play are transporting us eastwards. The Asian setting is created thanks to the pagoda-like appearance of the game screen as well as animation and design that has clearly looked to the Middle Kingdom for inspiration.
The Treasure Horse base game has a 3×3 structure, with a 4th reel appearing to determine the level of multiplier. There is a free spins feature to watch out for and 18 betways. The maximum win on this slot is a generous 540,000 coins, which is more than enough to make us eager to saddle up and get spinning.
Thor’s Lightning/The Greatest Train Robbery – Red Tiger
We have been watching the Red Tiger studio’s progress with some interest. Founded in 2014, this developer is not short on surprises and has proven itself a worthy opponent to some of the bigger, older studios in terms of quality and creativity.
This year, there are two very different games on the release schedule from Red Tiger. Arriving first is Thor’s Lightning. Now, we know what you’re going to say. Do we really need another Nordic/Thor-inspired slot game? Well, clearly Red Tiger thinks so and given the studio’s track record, we’re willing to give it a chance.
This slot has an unusual 7×7 reel structure. The massive game screen is filled with familiar symbols from Scandinavian history and myth, including weapons, runes and the great tree Yggdrasil (not to be confused with the game developer of the same name).
Thor’s Lightning offers two kinds of free spins, set in the Valhalla and Muspell realms respectively.
Moving on to the next title, The Greatest Train Robbery has a Wild West theme and we get to follow a band of bandits as they attempt to steal a whole lotta loot from a steam train.
The reels are organised in a 5×4 pattern and features include random Wilds, Mystery symbols and free spins, all packaged up in a wonderfully rendered, cartoon-style that matches the theme beautifully.
The Wiz – ELK Studios
ELK Studios has gone magical this year, with its first release of the season taking on a distinctly wizardly flavour. The 5×4 game screen is home to a robe-wearing wizard, treasure chests and a Wild dragon that can appear at any moment.
Like its predecessors in the ELK Studios collection, The Wiz is gorgeous to look at and we expect it will be plenty of fun too, thanks to its free spins, Wilds and multiplier features.
The Wiz has a whopping 178 betways and a maximum coin win of 500,000. The slot has a variance that is described as medium-high, which means we can expect longer spells between wins, which are then likely to be more substantial.
There are literally hundreds of new games to watch out for this coming year. The ones we have chosen are just a few of the more interesting ones that we will be able to play in the first few months of 2019.
