New slots to look out for in February 2019

With January done and dusted, we are ready to tackle February 2019 with gusto. And so, it seems, are some of the top names in game development – just look at that line-up!

This month, we are expecting titles from some exciting studios and each of them have gone all out with these February releases. Veteran studios NetEnt and Pragmatic Play will be launching titles alongside developers like JFTW and ELK Studios.

Read on to find out what slot games are in the pipeline this month and to learn a little bit about them before they are released.

Treasure Horse by Pragmatic Play

Launch date: 7th February

Treasure Horse is one of those games that stands as proof of what an experienced development team can do with a classic format. With a 3×3 reel layout, players may be forgiven for assuming that this Pragmatic Play title is just another fruit machine copycat, albeit with an Asian-inspired theme.

A quick spin is all it takes to convince us otherwise. Despite what could be considered a restrictive reel structure, Pragmatic Play has managed to create a title that has no shortage of interesting features. And thanks to its higher-than-average volatility, players are also looking at very generous potential wins.

With an additional multiplier wheel making an appearance and a free spins feature also included, Treasure Horse may look like a fairly simple game but is in fact quite the exciting experience.

Safari King by Pragmatic Play

Launch date: 21st February

It seems that Pragmatic Play has gone for animal-themed slots this month, with a second offering that draws inspiration from the natural world. Safari King reminds us a little of games like King Tusk and Elephant King, both of which share the African Big 5 theme.

Safari King is built in a 5×3 setup and offers some familiar features including sticky Wilds and free spins, which can be retriggered ad infinitum. From the technical end, Safari King is clearly geared towards the casual, low-risk player thanks to its average variance and similarly average RTP.

Players looking for risk and high wins will likely not find Safari King very satisfying. But players who want their money and their gameplay to go as far as possible, this is a decent choice.
We haven’t been able to get our hands on any previews at the time of writing so it wouldn’t be fair to comment on the game’s visual design just yet. Still, who doesn’t love a lion?

Ticket to the Stars by Quickspin

Launch date: 12th February

When we first came across this title, it wasn’t clear if the ‘stars’ bit meant celebrities or actual heavenly bodies. Turns out it refers to the latter.

The theme of this game is space travel but not as we know it. Gone are the bulky space suits and dehydrated food – this is the space travel of the future! A luxury experience with robot staff taking care of passengers and even champagne on ice. This is definitely not budget travel!

This high variance game has a 5×3 reel layout and it includes some exciting features to go with that volatility. When free spins are activated, multipliers also come into play, boosting win potential significantly. Swooping Reels are active in the base and bonus games, with winning symbols being replaced with new ones, during the same round.

Quickspin has always had a high standard when it comes to visual design and Ticket to the Stars shows that off beautifully. The symbols and characters are bright, drawing the eye with whimsical animation. With this level of quality, it’s no wonder the Quickspin studio is such a player favourite!

Champions of Rome by Yggdrasil

Launch date: 21st February

In terms of entertainment value, there are few periods in history as exciting as the Roman era. Certainly, the ethics of forcing gladiators to fight to the death were iffy at best but there’s no denying that these events were crowd-pleasers. The Colosseum in Rome could seat 50,000 people!

Today, we can enjoy watching these sports without any actual blood, which is a much more acceptable option. Yggdrasil will be releasing Champions of Rome, a gladiator-themed slot that promises to bring the thrills with none of the death stuff.

We have got only scant details on this game but here’s what we do know. Champions of Rome is a 5-reel slot with 20 paylines. Symbols shaped like weapons will behave differently, depending on what they depict. Look out for the mace, a trident and a sword.

There is a free spins feature, which comes in two types – training and deathmatch, the latter having three levels. Finally, it is also possible to ‘buy’ free spins with coins. We are seriously looking forward to giving this one a whirl!

Golden Grimoire by NetEnt

Launch date: 21st February

NetEnt will be releasing Golden Grimoire this month after a little delay – it was meant to land in January – but what’s it all about? The word ‘grimoire’ is a French term that refers to a book of magic spells, which gives us a clue to what this slot is all about.

Golden Grimoire has 5 reels and 4 rows, 40 paylines and a medium/low volatility. The most unusual feature in the game is that symbols can be transformed, thanks to the Mystery Symbol. This has the potential to change the reels’ appearance significantly, without a spin of the reels.
There is also a free spins feature, during which these transformative Mystery Symbols become sticky.

Is NetEnt going to change the industry with this game? Probably not. The studio has come under fire for its insistence on creating low volatility/average RTP games of late and this one seems like a good example of both.

Still, this is a studio that has brought us plenty of classics in the past and we think it’s probably worth giving this one a try too.

Ecuador Gold by ELK Studios

Launch date: 19th February

Sadly there’s very little information about Ecuador Gold available right now. ELK Studios are keeping their cards close to their chest on this one for some reason.

There are some details we know of. Ecuador Gold will be a 5×3 reel slot, with 20 paylines. We can probably make a few educated guesses too. It will likely have a medium level of variance and, given that title, will centre on a mesoAmerican/El Dorado type of theme. Like our readers, we will simply have to wait till launch day to take a close look at this one.

Gorilla Go Wilder by NextGen

Launch date: 28th February

Details on Gorilla Go Wilder are a little thin on the ground right now, though we can guess that this slot is a sequel to the Gorilla Go Wild slot NextGen released back in 2015.

In that game, the Wilds symbols were a pretty important part of gameplay so we are going to guess that they are also a crucial element of the Go Wilder game to be released this month. We are also secretly hoping that this marks the return of the cute purple gorilla character that made his debut in the first game!

Shogun of Time by JustForTheWin/Microgaming

Launch date: 5th February

JustForTheWin has never been shy about trying new and unusual things. In Shogun of Time, the studio has combined an ancient Japanese warrior theme with time travel and pulls it off to great effect!

It starts off as a 4×3 reel layout in the bas game but a fifth reel is introduced during certain features. This takes the ways to win number up from 81 all the way to 243. This inventive approach to adding new reels adds excitement to gameplay and boosts winning chances all at once.

As with their previous releases, JFTW has not let us down in the visual design department. Dripping in electric neon and stuffed with Japanese motifs, this odd combination of themes works really well and promises to offer a thoroughly enjoyable slot experience.
