Grab your torch and watch your step as you descend into the greedy Goblin’s Cave, loaded to the brim with golden coins, gem-encrusted royal crowns, rings and other precious riches. As obliging as he is, the little critter here will spin the reels for you and hold your chosen symbols in place. But will he stay as kind and helpful or will he show his true monstrous colours when you’ll try to take his gold away?

Inspired by folk legends of Middle Ages Europe, the guys at Playtech came up with a simple goblin-themed online game, featuring a classic 3×3 reel set up and 3 paylines. To bring the slot to life, they have embellished it with a pick bonus round where you can win cash prizes plus a special symbol holding function where you could form a winning combination in a unique way.

As monstrously as goblins are portrayed in multiple cultures around Europe, there isn’t that much horror happening in Goblin’s Cave, the creature itself looks more homely than scary in his ripped slippers. The most disturbing part here is the hideous screeching sound each time the goblin swivels the reels, making you want to quit the game after just a few spins. Terrible sounds aside, there is a bonus round with instant cash prizes, and also wilds included, to help you create some winning combinations.
Goblin’s Cave is a treasure trove of all things sparkly, but red rubies are the most valuable gems of the lot. They pay 150x your stake for 3 identical symbols on a vertical payline and also replace all other symbols to help you hit that winning combo.
If it gets too dark in the Goblin’s Cave, look out for lantern scatters. Find 3 of them on a payline, and they’ll illuminate your way into the bonus round.
What might come across as confusing here to players used to the modern slot machines is the slot’s symbol holding function. On each spin, only the three bottom rows fill up with different symbols. These can be anything, from low to high-paying symbols or wilds to scatters and you can choose from any 3 in view.
You’ll then want to push the ‘Hold’ button underneath each of these reels to set your base symbol which will be held in the position for the spin. When two more identical symbols appear above your symbol, you’ll be ready to spin and build a winning combination. As you hit the spin button, the other two reels will spin, and all you can do is hope that you can land the right symbols on the corresponding reels to pick up a win or activate the bonus round.
Don’t worry if you forget to use the hold function. The slot will select symbols for you, but it won’t be as fun as picking symbols for yourself, especially if you can pick and hold a wild, a scatter or both for the duration of your spin.
Accumulating 3 lantern scatters on any of the 3 active paylines will take you deeper into the Goblin’s spooky grotto. On entrance, you’ll see 11 treasure chests each containing instant cash rewards. Pick one to collect your treasure. We were lucky to pick up a nice £100 reward before returning back into the main cave.
As much as goblins can be magical, this one is also greedy and won’t let you win more than 150x your stake per spin, let alone put your hands on anything resembling a jackpot. This is probably the lowest max payout we’ve seen in a long while.
Goblin’s Cave is not a very volatile game, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful with your budget. Goblins love to hoard gold, and they’ll take your pennies when you least expect it. The RTP varies greatly from casino to casino, so be sure to pick one that has at least a rate above the industry average. Reportedly, it can go up to a staggering 99.32%, but realistically, you’ll probably come across an RTP score between 94.50% – 96%.
Playtech casinos are the best sites to play the Goblin’s Cave slot if you are interested in some classic gameplay from the developer. Our favourites include Mr Play and Videoslots among others if you’re ready to play for real money.
This is one of Playtech’s slots that has not yet been adapted to mobile play. Imagine tapping on the hold button for each spin – not a very efficient way to play a slot on a mobile device.
