Atlantis, Troy, Tikal – explorers and adventurers have been searching for lost of hidden cities for as long as they have been… well, lost or hidden. Swedish game studio NetEnt has taken one such expedition and turned it into an iconic video slot game – Gonzo’s Quest!

This slot follows Gonzo, the protagonist conquistador, as he searches for the lost city of El Dorado. The legends tell of a cosmopolis, deep in the South America jungle, made entirely from gold and jewels. El Dorado has since been dismissed as the stuff of fairytales but Gonzo seems to be onto something.

With the crumbling ruins of the former Mayan empire as the backdrop, Gonzo’s Quest is an exciting slot game that has set the standard for a whole host of similar slots thanks to its innovative game mechanics. Throw in NetEnt’s signature game design style and the result is an award-winning casino game that remains popular with both casinos and with players. It is a popular choice when bonuses award NetEnt free spins.

Released in 2010, Gonzo’s Quest has held its own in a competitive arena and remained one of NetEnt’s most recognisable titles and an example the best online slots can offer.

Gonzo’s Quest bonus features

The stand-out feature of Gonzo’s Quest is its reel structure. Or, more specifically, the absence of a reel structure. Instead of spinning reels, symbols appear from the top of the game window as big carved blocks of stone, crashing down to stack on top of each other and hopefully forming winning combinations across betlines. Read more about the Avalanche Feature below.

It was this design feature that put Gonzo’s Quest at the fore when it was first released and it remains a strong influence on games being made today. NetEnt’s first platinum game, Gonzo’s Quest also offers exciting in-game features that make it an enjoyable title and a player favourite.

Avalanche System

When you first open Gonzo’s Quest and hit the button, you’ll notice Mayan symbols falling into view. These display designs such a snake, a hawk and a number of different masks. When a winning combination is formed, the winning symbols explode and disappear, making room for new symbols to fall into the gaps they leave behind. If that reminds you a little of the classic video game Tetris, you are not alone!

The multiplier meter, which sits in the top right-hand side of the game screen, will keep track of the multiplier value, at first going from x1 to x2 and the potentially all the way up to x5. This means that any winning spin is multiplied by that factor!

An animated Wild symbol appears at random on Gonzo’s Quest, with the ability to mimic any and all other symbols, including the Free Fall symbol. This boosts the chances of striking a winning combination on any of the 20 betlines.

Gonzo’s Quest free spins

A feature similar to free spins appears in this slot, only in Gonzo’s Quest, they’re called Free Falls. When 3 or more Free Fall symbols appear on a betline, from left to right, 10 Free Falls are awarded. If 3 or more of these symbols appear on two separate betlines, 20 Free Falls are won.

When you trigger the Free Fall feature, an animation starts. Watch as Gonzo walks through the gateway that appears, towards the shining pyramid in the background. A counter keeps track of how many Free Falls remain. Another animation plays at the end of the Free Fall feature.

With the Free Fall active, further Falls can be triggered when 3 or more Free Fall symbols appear.

During this feature, wins are multiplied by the value displayed at the top of the game screen, up to a maximum of x15.

Gonzo’s Quest jackpot

There is no jackpot available at Gonzo’s Quest, pooled or local. However, with 20 betlines and a max win of 9,375 coins on each, players still stand a chance of taking home a tidy sum.

Gonzo’s Quest has a Return to Player value of 95.97% which is an average for online slots. However, the variance is low, which means you win quite often but smaller sums.

Gonzo’s Quest on Mobile

Take Gonzo and his adventure everywhere thanks to NetEnt Touch. You can play on iPhone, iPad or Android devices. Gonzo’s Quest is one of the first slot games to undergo the Virtual Reality treatment!
