Luckily, we have moved away from considering that kind of thing as entertainment but it’s easy to understand the appeal. With Champions of Rome, a 2019 Yggdrasil video slot, we get to experience the thrill without any of the bloodshed – a win-win all round!
We have come to expect a certain level of quality from Yggdrasil game releases and we think the studio has continued to uphold those lofty standards with Champions of Rome. While it can be hard to replicate the feeling of sitting among 50,000 spectators in the Colosseum, Yggdrasil has done an excellent job of immersing the player in the atmosphere of a gladiatorial fight.
Not only those Champions of Rome look the part, it also provides a host of in-game features that up the entertainment factor for players. Let’s take a look at each of them and how they help make Champions of Rome an unforgettable slot.

Gladiatorial combat may have been a gruesome and gory spectator sport but it sure made for some interesting visuals! Big, beefy warriors, armed with all manner of weapons and battling it out for glory – it’s no wonder so many movies have been made about this kind of event!
In Champions of Rome, we can see a number of different symbols. The lower value ones appear as coins as well as various majestic animals. Of higher value are the three gladiators themselves, with the one in red awarding up to 60 times the stake when 5 land on a payline.
The Wild symbol can substitute for any of the regular symbols on the reels, boosting the chances of hitting a winning combination.
Champions of Rome Gladiator Feature
This feature is activated when two Free Spins symbol land on the same spin. When triggered, one of three weapons will be thrown at the reels and where they land, a special Wild combo appears.
If the sword appears, it will transform a 2×1 space and a 1×2 space Wild. A 2×2 Wild will appear when the mace is the chosen weapon. Finally, landing the trident will award 4 Wilds, placed at random.
Champions of Rome Free Spins
Free spins are triggered when 3 or more Free Spins symbols land on the reels. Three, four or five symbols will award 1, 15 or 600 times the initial bet. Once activated, a random Gladiator symbol will replace all high value symbols with their weapon of choice, awarding 4 Wilds during each free spin.
The player will then be able to choose between one of two modes. In Training mode, the player receives 8 free spins, which are triggered automatically. Any winnings are awarded to the player instantly.
In Deathmatch mode, there are three options to choose from: 7 spins with x2 multiplier, 6 spins with x3 or 5 with x4 multiplier. In this mode, the player must win at least 22.5 times their initial stake (i.e. at least 450 coins) in order to keep any winnings. If this target is not reached, the player receives only a consolation prize, which is either 5 Training mode free spins or a small coin win of between 2 and 10 times the total stake.
Players can enter the Free Spins mode without landing the required symbols through the Buy Bonus feature for 50x the total stake. During free spins, landing the Beast symbol will award one additional free spin per symbol.
There is no jackpot available on Champions of Rome. However, thanks to the innovative Deathmatch Mode in the Free Spins feature, Yggdrasil introduces the potential to make significant winning spins.
This video slot has a Return to Player value of 96.4%.
Champions of Rome, like all titles in the Yggdrasil games collection, works perfectly, no matter the platform. Enjoy this exciting game on your laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet device and bask in the glory of Rome’s finest warriors.
