With 2018 all wrapped up and a new year full of possibilities underway, the team at JohnSlots has hit the ground running in the search for the newest slots available this January.

We have left the tinsel behind and are getting ready for a variety of new games, all with different themes and exciting game mechanics to look forward to. Read on to learn more about what we can expect this month.

Strolling Staxx by NetEnt

Launch date: 24th January

This won’t be the first NetEnt game with the staxx mechanism in it. In fact, it’s the third – Neon Staxx and Butterfly Staxx were the first two in this series. But just because they’re related doesn’t mean they are the same.

Indeed, Strolling Staxx breaks with the 5×4 reel layout of its older siblings and brings us symbols in a 5-reel, 3-row format. There are 10 fixed paylines – another deviation from the 40 paylines that appeared in both Neon and Butterfly.

The symbols on Strolling Staxx looks like they may have been inspired by a little indie game called Minecraft. The fruits have a distinctly Cubist appearance to them but thanks to some top-shelf animation and design, they still appear squishy and bouncy.

With regards to features, NetEnt has opted not to go completely overboard, sticking to simple mechanics that are nonetheless rewarding for players. There’s the Bonus Bet button. This feature lets players spin with a higher bet while enabling the Extra Chance feature. This increases the chance of landing a Colossal symbol cluster, of 3×3 size, either partially or fully on the reels.

Re-spins are an important part of this game, just as they were in Butterfly Staxx and Neon Staxx. When a stack of identical symbols appears on the reels, covering all the available spaces, the Re-Spin feature kicks in. The fully stacked reel moves one step to the left on every subsequent spin, until all the stacked reels have shuffled off the game screen entirely.

The best bit about these re-spins is that if new stacks appear during the feature, it is re-activate for further spins!

Trolls Bridge by Yggdrasil

Launch date: 8th January

Whether they hang out under fairytale bridges or post awful comments online, trolls get something of a bad rap these days. Luckily, Yggdrasil’s latest slot has helped us to see that the mythical type, at least, are not all bad!

This game will definitely look a little familiar to those who have played World of Warcraft before. The style is quite similar and the trolls themselves look like they could have marched straight out of the wildly popular MMORPG. There are four troll characters in total and they appear on the reels as the highest value symbols.

Special symbols include three different Wilds, only one of which appears in the base game. The other two appear during free spins.

Trolls Bridge features a Golden Bet option. This feature has become increasingly popular with game developers, a number of whom have included it in recent releases. In Trolls Bridge, selecting the Golden Bet will raise the wagering bracket from between 20p to £200, up to 25p and £250. It also nudges the RTP up by a little bit and selecting the Golden Bet will award players an additional pick during free spins.

The Bonus Pot symbol can land on reel 5 and when it does, players can receive one of four prizes, which include a coin win and free spins/feature pick combinations. With Wilds and multipliers activated, the Free Spins feature has the potential to be very lucrative for lucky players.

The Great Albini by Foxium

Launch date: 9th January

This game has been created by Foxium, the Estonia-based studio that has been releasing exciting titles since 2015. Distributed through the Microgaming platform Quickfire, it can be found at most Microgaming casinos.

The Great Albini is the name of the star of the slot, a magician delighting audiences with his tricks. The showman himself appears as the highest value symbol on the reels, alongside Wilds, scatters, mystery boxes and bonus boxes.

Those mystery boxes add a little… well, mystery. Land a full stack of them on reel three to trigger 3 re-spins, with the boxes fixed in place. Additional mystery boxes landing during these spins will also be fixed in place and more re-spins triggered. This continues until there are no more free spaces or no more boxes appear. The boxes are then replaced by a random symbol, which means the winning payout stands to be significant.

Bonus boxes award free spins when they land on reels 2 to 4. The game screen also expands and Albini’s assistant Lily appears as the stacked Aztec Lady Wild. With multipliers and re-spins thrown in, the free spins feature could well make all the difference when spinning The Great Albini.
